Turkey Talk

ERIE Employees Rick Hinman and Laura Johnson count the many dinners assembled on the third floor of the F.W. Hirt Perry Square Building.

Dec. 10, 2008 - Economic times may be tough but, thanks to the big-heartedness of ERIE Employees and Agents, over a thousand Erie area families enjoyed free Thanksgiving dinners.

“The generosity of the ERIE Family never ceases to amaze me,” said Rick Hinman, Infrastructure Applications and Data Administration section manager, who has been organizing the Turkey Drive for the past 22 years.

“This year we raised more money than ever before,” he continued. “Employees and Agents contributed 1,202 dinners, boosting the total to 1,528.”

The meals were distributed by Catholic Charities through a variety of social organizations throughout Erie, Pa.

Employee fundraisers

Teams of Home Office Employees from Corporate Training and Development, Commercial Underwriting and Product and Policy Services were among the many Employees who helped raise funds for the annual food drive.

“Whether Employee teams donated a single dinner or many more, every single contribution was needed and appreciated,” Rick said.

In Corporate Training and Development, Employees created a featherless Styrofoam turkey named Tulula and dressed her with a single pastel feather for every $5 donated.

Employees from Commercial Undewriting and Product and Policy Services raised money all year for the turkey drive: they held 50/50 raffles, coffee and dougnut days and auctions. By the time they were done, they had raised enough money to purchase nearly 200 dinners.

“The Thanksgiving Turkey Drive is such a great opportunity to help others,” said Chantal Krause, professional curriculum project manager. “We support the Turkey Drive because we believe it’s a good cause and the recipients reap the benefits almost immediately.”
